Frequently asked questions
What is organic?

First off, you should know that the dairy industry is one of the most regulated in the world. When our regulators say we’re organic, they mean it. We have to qualify in three key areas: what the cows eat, where they live and how they’re treated. Our organic cows get only 100% organic feed. They have direct access to pasture, and their pens have plenty of room. They also get to go outside for lots of fresh air and sunshine on a consistent basis. And, of course, our cows are never treated with growth hormones or antibiotics.

Is organic milk better for you than regular milk?

We realize that families, especially many mothers, are looking for organic dairy products. They just plain feel better about purchasing organic foods. So we want to give them that option. According to the National Dairy Council, however, there is no difference in the safety or nutrition of organic dairy products compared with conventional dairy.

Is organic milk as safe as regular milk?

Absolutely. Traditional and organic milk both provide the same nine essential nutrients, including calcium, vitamin D and potassium. For instance, one cup (8 oz.) of Shamrock Farms traditional or organic milk provides the same amount of bone-building calcium that kids and adults need daily. As we mentioned above, the National Dairy Council says there’s no difference in the safety or nutrition of organic dairy products compared with conventional dairy.

Why is the expiration date on your organic milk shorter than other brands?

Because our organic is local in Arizona. We process our organic products right here in Phoenix, just an hour away from our farm in Stanfield. That means our milk gets to your grocery shelf in three days or less. Since we don’t have to ship it long distances, we use the traditional pasteurization method so it keeps plenty fresh for as long as you need it. That means our code life is the same as any fresh milk – 19 days

Is all Shamrock Farms milk considered organic?

Although Shamrock Farms’ traditional milk is rBST free, it is not considered organic. Our organic milk and sour cream comes from our herd of organic milking cows on our local farm. It’s important to remember that neither the traditional nor the organic milk has added growth hormones such as rBST, which is a concern for many moms.

How long do Shamrock Farms products last after the expiration date?

We guarantee the freshness of our dairy for a full seven days past the code date on the package when stored under proper conditions (approximately 38 degrees Fahrenheit). Once a dairy product has been opened, however, we recommend that it is fully enjoyed within seven days of opening and regardless of code date.

Why offer both organic and traditional milk?

Our consumers have different needs, and they want options. Many of them are interested in giving organic dairy a try and making it part of their daily dairy consumption, so we want to make sure they have the opportunity to purchase it from a local brand they know and trust.

How do I really know Shamrock Farms organic milk is really organic?

All of Shamrock Farms’ organic milk and sour cream has the “certified-organic” USDA organic seal right on the packaging. This seal means that a government-approved certifier inspects the farm where the food is grown to make sure the farmer is following all the USDA organic rules. For more than 85 years, Shamrock Farms has been the brand Arizonans trust for great-tasting dairy, and that trust will continue with our organic line

Are the Shamrock Farms organic products 100% organic?

No dairy products are 100% organic, because the FDA requires that all milk be fortified with vitamins. But Shamrock Farms organic products are USDA-certified organic.

Is Shamrock Farms organic milk all-natural?

Yep. Our organic products are considered all-natural because they contain no “Genetically Modified Organism” – no artificial color, artificial flavor or any type of artificial preservatives.

Where can I find Shamrock Farms organic milk products?

Look for them in the good old dairy case at groceries and natural foods stores – wherever Shamrock Farms products are sold. As always, our packaging will draw the attention of kids and parents with Roxie, the sassy-but-loveable company spokescow. Click here to go to our product locator.

What is BST and rBST?

BST is the naturally occurring hormone in cows that stimulates lactation. It is impossible for milk to be “BST free.” rBST, on the other hand, is the synthetic hormone that is supposedly identical to the naturally occurring hormone. If you give it to lactating cows, it can increase milk production. Shamrock Farms does not use the growth hormone rBST on any of our 10,000-plus cows – organic or otherwise. Never have. We just don’t believe in it.

How is organic feed different from regular feed?

According to USDA guidelines, organic feed must be grown without the use of pesticides. Much of our feed is grown on our own lush, green pasture right here at the farm. If needed, we purchase a portion of our organic feed from an outside, certified organic farmer. That way, our organic cows are raised on 100% certified organic feed.
